The open book part isn't a slogan
ABOUT OPEN BOOK CYBER
Most cybersecurity companies sell two things: fear and complexity. Scary statistics to get you in the door, then jargon and vague invoices to keep you from asking questions. Open Book Cyber was built to be the opposite of that. Plain English. Flat rates agreed before any work begins. Recommendations backed by evidence from your actual environment, not a sales quota.
Two roads lead to the same unprotected place
WHY WE EXIST
We've seen ransomware nearly take a small business out entirely. Not in a headline, but up close, watching an owner fight to keep a business alive after one attack. What stayed with us wasn't just the damage. It was noticing, in the years since, that small businesses tend to land in one of two places about cybersecurity: "we're too small to be a target," or the opposite: the problem feels so big and so technical that they have no idea where to start, so they never start. Both roads end at the same unprotected place.
Open Book Cyber exists to be the third road. Mom-and-pop shops, CPA practices, and independent insurance agencies are vital to communities like ours, and they hold some of the most sensitive data in town. They deserve a clear starting point, sized and priced for a small firm, with no fear-selling and no jargon. We know where to start, because helping firms like these start is all we do.
And yes, the name is literal in more ways than one. This practice was founded on a lifelong love of reading and writing. It shows in the work: every report and policy we deliver is written to actually be read.
Four things we won't compromise on
HOW WE WORK
1 - Plain English
Every report, policy, and training session we deliver is written to be understood by the people who run the business, not just the people who run the servers. If you need a glossary to read your own risk report, we've failed.
3 - Evidence before advice
Our Security Pipeline runs in a deliberate order: assess first, then report, then write policies, then train. Each step depends on real findings from the one before it. We don't recommend what we haven't verified you need.
2 - No surprise invoices
Every engagement is a flat-rate quote you approve before any work begins. The number we agree on is the number you pay. No hourly meters, no scope-creep billing, no invoice you didn't see coming.
4 - Right-sized, on purpose
If a smaller engagement fits where you are today, that's what we'll recommend. Our goal isn't dependency; it's giving you the knowledge and protection to run your business with confidence.
WHERE THIS PRACTICE COMES FROM
We learned security inside the industries we now serve
Open Book Cyber's practice was built on nearly a decade of hands-on IT and security work inside two regulated industries, banking and healthcare, in environments that never had the budget for a dedicated security department. That last part isn't a footnote; it's the whole point.
We learned security the way our clients have to live it: worn as one hat among many, done right anyway, and documented well enough to satisfy the examiners, auditors, and insurers who came asking. When we say we understand what it's like to be a small firm facing big compliance expectations, it's because that's where this practice comes from.

Start with a conversation, not a contract
Every engagement begins with a free 30-minute consultation: your concerns, your environment, and an honest read on which service fits where you are today, if any. If the answer is "you don't need us yet," we'll say so.
